Shorea

Shorea wood garden benches are a great value in outdoor furniture.  Shorea has many of the same properties as teak (in fact, it is actually denser than teak) without the extra cost.  Shorea is a non-endangered hardwood growing naturally and plentifully in Asia Pacific protected forests. In the Asia Pacific, shorea has been the wood of choice for centuries in shipbuilding, furniture, houses, and many other uses. Because of its hardness and the natural oils present in the wood, shorea products are extremely resistant to fungi, termites, rot and decay. In addition, the wood is also carefully kiln-dried prior to production.

 

Shorea outdoor furniture does not need to be sealed or stained, it can literally last 100 years or more outdoors if left untreated.  Untreated shorea will weather naturally to a grayish color, but if you prefer the original light brown look, simply treat periodically with teak oil (available at most hardware stores).
